WateRefuge Loop
Provide sustainable and reliable sanitation to refugee populations by recycling and purifying bathing water.
The challenge
According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the refugee population has been increased at an alarming rate since the past decade. The majority of refugee camps worldwide cannot provide the minimum daily recommended water per person, resulting in water-borne diseases due to lack of water for sanitation and cleaning purposes. Access to adequate sanitation services is critical to prevent transmissible diseases and epidemics within the refugee communities.
The solution
Integration of a recycling and purifying system to the existing bathing facilities of the refugee camps. The water used for sanitation and bathing purposes is recirculated and filtrated resulting in less water usage. The amount of water that cannot be efficiently filtered is stored and can be easily collected and removed, especially in refugee camps with poor sewage systems and wastewater treatment facilities. The system operates with PV solar panels to provide grid independence and reliable operation.
